Mouth guards are typically used by athletes to protect the mouth and teeth from injury. They are also used to prevent teeth grinding and are made from types of plastic that are fitted and designed to feel like rubber. Proper care and cleaning of mouth guards can help prevent infection and can also make the mouth guard last longer. In addition to following a dentist's instructions for mouth guard care, you can practice additional steps at home.

Step 1

Rinse your mouth guard with cool soapy water or mouthwash after every use. Be sure to rinse it well and allow it to air dry.

Step 2

Clean your mouth guard with toothpaste and a nonabrasive toothbrush once a week.

Step 3

Store your mouth guard in a ventilated container.

Step 4

Protect the mouth guard from hot water or direct sunlight. Heat can distort the mouth guard's shape.

Step 5

Check the mouth guard periodically for holes or tears.

Step 6

Bring your mouth guard to your dental visits so your doctor can check its condition.

Tips and Warnings

  • Brush your teeth before putting in your mouth guard. Call a doctor if you experience the symptoms of wearing a contaminated mouth guard, such as difficulty breathing, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and wheezing.
  • Do not bend or chew on your mouth guard. This could ruin its shape. Do not share mouth guards with others. This could spread bacteria and infection.
