Rugby is a fast-paced team sport involving running, passing, catching, tackling and kicking. It is similar to North American football but contains major differences. Rugby is an extremely physical sport and one that requires extensive physical and technical training.
Objective
The goal of rugby is to score by either running the ball into a designated goal area or by kicking it through a pair of goal posts. Rugby is an extremely physical sport that involves running and tackling.
Logistics
Rugby is played on a field about the size of a soccer field, which is longer and wider than a football field. The field is usually 110 yards long and 75 yards wide. Additionally, there are end zones behind each goalpost ranging from 10 to 22 meters long. The goalposts are H shaped and are on the goal line.
Players
Each team has 15 players on the field during play. The players are numbered depending on the position. Forwards are number one through eight and backs nine through 15. Forwards are generally larger and stronger players. Their main job is to gain possession of the ball. Backs are smaller and faster. They are used to receive the ball from forwards and try to move the ball up the field.
Play of Game
The game is started when one team kicks the ball off to the opposing team. From there, both teams go back and forth trying to move the ball toward the opponent's endzone, similar to North American football. There are three ways to move the ball: running, passing and kicking. Players are allowed to run the ball until they are tackled or run out of bounds. Players can pass the ball to an open teammate. However, the ball can only be passed laterally or backward. Players can move the ball forward by kicking it. All players are allowed to move the ball and players on either team are allowed to gain possession whenever possible.
Scoring
There are four ways to score in rugby. If a player is able to run the ball into the opponent's endzone, known as a try, the team gets five points. After a try, the team has the opportunity to gain two additional points by converting a kick through the goal posts from 10 meters out. Teams can gain three points from a drop kick. A drop kick can be taken from anywhere on the field during the course of play. After a major foul, a team can try for a penalty shot, where a player can try a kick from the spot of the foul. A penalty kick is worth three points.
