The clothes you wear during your workout are an important factor and can make or break your workout. An outfit that does not fit or is uncomfortable can hinder what could have been a great workout. Clothing can comply with your routine and let you feel comfortable and at ease. Many factors come into play when selecting the correct fitness clothes.

Step 1

Making sure your fitness clothing fits properly is critical and will help you feel good through your workout. Choose loose-fitting clothing that covers you properly and is flexible. Select a size that avoids chafing; make sure you can move properly while working out.

Step 2

Select the right clothing for what time of exercise you are doing. If you are going biking or running, you should not wear long and baggy pants that you could trip on or get stuck in your spokes. A cardiovascular workout would call for loose clothing that lets sweat evaporate easier. More form-fitting clothing is appropriate for strength training so you can see the muscles you are training.

Step 3

Rubber- and plastic-based clothing does not allow proper ventilation of your body and can cause your body temperature to be high. Choose fabrics that keep your body cool and allow body sweat to evaporate. Wicking fabrics are breathable synthetics that pull sweat away from your skin, which keeps your body cool. Cotton clothing absorbs sweat from the body but cannot pull sweat away from the skin, causing your clothes to feel heavy and wet after it absorbs too much sweat.

Step 4

Changing weather calls for different types of clothing. In hot weather, wear fabrics that allow skin to breath and good ventilation. Wear cool-colored, loose-fitting clothing to avoid heat-related illness. In cold weather, dress in three layers of warm clothing so after you start working out and warming up, you can remove layers easily. Wear gloves, ear warmers and a hat to protect exposed skin. Avoid wool fabrics and wear wicking fabrics closest to the body followed by warming layers.

Step 5

As important as clothing is, so are the shoes and socks that you select. Select shoes that are comfortable and fit your feet properly with lateral and arch support. Wear running shoes for jogging, running and walking. Choose socks with a breathable fabric that helps protect your feet.
