According to EveryDiet, Ehret embarked on research to establish this diet after he suffered from excess albumin and mucus in his urine. Since the publication of the book, in 1922, the Ehret diet has been followed by people who wish to cleanse their bodies or improve their health.

The Mucusless diet is beneficial for people who wish to perform a body cleanse. You will not experience the side effects of typical cleanse, like nausea or diarrhea. The Ehret diet itself is restrictive, in that you do not have many food choices. It focuses on natural, vegetarian foods. According to EveryDiet, a typical day on the Ehret diet might consist of fresh fruit for breakfast; a baked sweet potato, vegetable broth and steamed vegetables for lunch; carrot juice as a snack; and a dinner of a green leafy vegetable salad. This fast can last for two to 40 days at a time, explains EveryDiet.
Benefits
In the short term, your body is thought to rid itself of toxins. This is believed to help ward of illnesses. You may also lose weight, depending on how long you fast. In the long run, you may gain healthy eating habits and develop an appreciation for whole, natural foods as opposed to processed ones.
Risks
Unlike other types of fasts, the Ehret diet advocates extended fasting. EveryDiet reports that this can damage your health in the long run. Short-term side effects have also been reported. These include excessive fatigue, anemia and dental problems. You also risk losing a substantial amount of weight in a short period of time, due to the lack of calories and fat that this diet provides. In turn, you may quickly gain all of the weight back once you stop the Mucusless diet.
Considerations
Although some people may benefit from the Ehret diet, its principles are based on outdated research. According to the Arnold Ehret Health Club, Ehret's book was published in 1922. Since this diet has extreme limitations, you should check with your doctor before starting it. Otherwise, you may risk more serious health repercussions due to a lack of nutrition. To lose weight on this diet, the book recommends that you should perform exercise, like dancing and walking.
