Tandem bikes can be a great way to spend time exercising with another person. You can get a tandem bike suited for an adult or a child and ride with much less confusion and traffic when you're riding down bike paths or trails. Tandem bicycles are easy for most people to ride, but they're a little different from traditional bikes and require teamwork on both ends.

Step 1

Position the front rider seated on the bike saddle with both feet planted on the ground. This will help stabilize the bike as the second rider mounts the bicycle on the back seat.

Step 2

Hold the bicycle firm while the second rider gets on.

Step 3

Begin biking on a flat surface with both riders pedaling. The second rider should not be as forceful a rider as the rider in front because their vision and ability to steer will be impaired. Instead, the back rider should defer to the front rider, follow instructions and pedal or brake to match the front rider.

Step 4

Move slowly at first to let both riders acclimate to the weight and physics of another rider. As you both become comfortable, pick up your speed until you are both satisfied.

Step 5

Slow down by braking in unison. The front rider will be the one to bring the bike to a full halt and set their foot on the ground. The back rider should keep their feet on the bicycle pedals until the bike comes to a complete stop.

Tips and Warnings

  • The larger person of the two should be the one seated at the front of the bicycle.
