3 Ways to Reduce Osteoporosis Pain

1. Get the Right Posture Support

Much of the pain associated with osteoporosis comes from the more pronounced effects of gravity on weakened skeletal systems. A decrease in bone density can lead to stooping. This can impinge nerves or strain muscles habitually. You can literally prop up your posture and reduce the stress on your bones with proper footwear and mobility support aids.
Wear low-heeled shoes that fit well and support your foot. Many perceived losses of height are due to compromised posture that begins with poor foot support. A chiropractor or podiatrist may prescribe custom orthotics that will alleviate much of your pain. Your doctor may also prescribe a cane, walker or other mobility aid that can also reduce discomfort from the disease over time.

2. Exercise to Feel Better

Even the most severe osteoporosis cases can benefit by regular weight-bearing exercise. Start out walking a few minutes a day and try to reach the recommended goal of at least 30 minutes, three times a week. Giving the bones and muscles a regular workout will strengthen them and improve your circulation, making you feel better, even if hurts a little bit at first. Ask your doctor if you're not sure about safe limits, but a tiny bit of exercise is infinitely better than none. Most patients can enjoy walking, dancing, gardening or low-impact aerobics.

3. Take Safe Pain Relievers

When pain flares, it can be due to a strain that causes inflammation in the muscles and tendons surrounding the joints or bones. Suffering through the pain because you don't like the idea of taking pain relievers can prolong the condition. Some health care practitioners suggest taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen for 3 full days, in order to decrease the inflammation adequately. Using pain relievers can reduce other risks of the disease, such as equilibrium loss during painful movement, which can lead to falls and fractures.
