Cephalosporins are a class of prescription antibiotic medications commonly used to treat bacterial infections within the bladder or kidneys (urinary tract infection). This type of medication can be used by both children and adults and is typically administered by mouth (capsule or tablet) or injection. Speak with your doctor if you have any concerns regarding side effects associated with cephalosporin use prior to beginning treatment.

Diarrhea

While receiving treatment with a cephalosporin medication you can develop diarrhea as a side effect. Diarrhea can cause you to develop a frequent urge to have a bowel movement. Stools can also appear loose or watery due to diarrhea. Certain people can develop black or tarry stools--an indication of blood within the stools--as a side effect of cephalosporin treatment. If you have diarrhea, it is important that you stay hydrated, as this side effect can cause an increased risk of dehydration in some people. Additional symptoms associated with diarrhea include abdominal bloating, cramping or pain. Though rare, some patients can experience severe abdominal pain or tenderness while receiving treatment with this medication.

Flu-like Symptoms

You can develop flu-like symptoms while receiving treatment with a cephalosporin medication. Flu-like symptoms can include chills, fever, cough, sore throat or swollen glands, reports the website Drugs.com.

Oral Sores

Cephalosporin medications can cause you to develop sores within your mouth while receiving treatment. White spots, ulcers or sores can appear along the gum line, tongue or on the inside of your cheeks. Certain people can also develop these skin lesions on the lips or around the mouth. These symptoms typically resolve once treatment with the cephalosporin medication has ended.

Fatigue

Treatment with cephalosporin medications can cause you to feel abnormally fatigued. Symptoms of sleepiness, tiredness or muscle weakness can also occur. Such symptoms can make it difficult for you to get out of bed in the morning or complete tasks associated with your daily work or school responsibilities.

Bruising

Certain people receiving treatment with cephalosporins can develop unusual bleeding or bruising as a side effect of this class of medications. Minor injuries, such as bumping into a coffee table, can cause abnormal bruising to develop in some people. These symptoms typically resolve once cephalosporin treatment has ended.

Skin Rash

Though rare, a skin rash can develop as a side effect of cephalosporin treatment. Your skin may appear red, irritated, dry or inflamed while you receive treatment with this medication. Severe skin reactions, such as hives, in conjunction with breathing difficulties can indicate an allergic reaction to cephalosporin and require immediate medical attention.
