Chantix, the brand name of the smoking cessation medication varenicline, works to block the chemicals in the brain that feel pleasure when smoking. However, although Chantix can be an effective addition to a smoking-cessation plan, using it is not without risks. People considering the use of Chantix should talk to their doctor about these risks before deciding if Chantix is right for them.
Changes in Mental Health
On July 1, 2009, the United States Food and Drug Administration began requiring the manufacturer of Chantix to include a black box warning on the medication. This warning states that there are significant mental health risks to those who take Chantix. Changes in behavior, depression, hostility and even suicidal thoughts or tendencies may occur when using Chantix. The FDA warning states that people experiencing any of these symptoms should contact their doctor immediately.
Drowsiness
Chantix may cause drowsiness, which can impair both thinking and reaction time, warns Drugs.com. Although the level of drowsiness may vary depending upon the individual, this drowsiness may make driving or operating heavy machinery dangerous. Therefore, people taking Chantix should refrain from doing these things until they know how Chantix will affect them.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Complications
Chantix is classified as a class C pregnancy medication, which means that pregnant women may harm their unborn baby by taking it, warns Drugs.com. It is also possible that this medication may be transferred to a baby through breastfeeding, although this has not been confirmed. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should talk to their doctors about these risks before taking Chantix.
Skin Reactions
Although rare, Chantix's website warns that some people have serious skin reactions when taking Chantix. These skin reactions can be life-threatening, and include rash, redness, swelling and peeling of the skin. Contact a doctor immediately if any of these reactions occur.
Allergic Reaction
Allergic reactions to Chantix sometimes occur and can be life-threatening, warns Chantix's website. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the face, mouth and throat and difficulty breathing. Seek medical treatment immediately if such a reaction occurs.
Drug Interactions
Chantix can interact negatively with certain drugs to produce potentially dangerous reactions. All herbs, vitamins and medications, prescription or otherwise, should be reported to a doctor before taking Chantix to help eliminate this risk. However, those who take insulin, asthma medication or blood thinners should be particularly cautious, warns Chantix's website.
