Proper nutrition is the easiest and best way to achieve optimal health. It is critical to consume adequate amounts of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vitamins and minerals in order to keep the body functioning normally. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats and healthy sources of fats will keep the body in great shape.
A balanced diet
A balanced diet is crucial in order to achieve optimal health. Proper consumption of carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals and fiber help to the body function properly. Current ratios of carbohydrates, fats, and protein suggested by the USDA are 55 percent, 30 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body's main source of fuel, and come in a variety of sources---but the ones most often consumed are starches and sucrose. Starches include foods like pastas, breads, rice and potatoes. These starches are then converted into glucose, which travels throughout the body providing energy. Sucrose, otherwise known as table sugar, is found in high amounts in baked goods, and provides a quick burst of energy. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that helps to move food through the digestive system, and is found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Fats
Fats are another important source of fuel---and also are crucial to the body's insulation. While fats often get a bad rap, they are important for the proper functioning of the body. When consuming fats, the best options are poly- or mono-unsaturated fats. These are shown to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, diminishing the risk of heart disease.
Proteins
Proteins are composed of smaller molecules known as amino acids, which are essential for growth and repair of the body's tissues. Proteins can also be used as a source of energy---however, this typically occurs only during periods of starvation, or when the body is deprived of adequate levels of proteins. When choosing proteins, look for lean sources such as poultry, lean red meats, fish or soy.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals are required in very small quantities. Supplementation may be necessary for vegetarians, pregnant women or the elderly. Consult your health care provider if you suspect you may not be getting adequate levels of vitamins or minerals.
