Rose essential oil, also called rose otto, is steam-distilled from the petals of the popular flower and has a soothing effect on the body and mind. The lesser expensive version, rose absolute, is solvent-extracted and is a popular ingredient in perfumes.
According to "The Essential Oils Book" by Colleen Dodt, rose essential oil helps with depression, insomnia, stress, grief, sadness and low self-esteem. Its astringent properties have benefits for the skin, and its aphrodisiac properties set a romantic mood. There are many ways to use rose essential oil.

Step 1

Add a few drops of rose essential oil to an aromatherapy diffuser. As its scent fills the room, rose essential oil can help clear breathing, alleviate a headache, uplift your spirits and create a romantic mood.

Step 2

Mix 5 to 10 drops of rose essential oil into a warm bath, which has the same effects as the aromatherapy diffuser, but also helps stimulate, moisturize and soften your skin, as well as enhance circulation and alleviate PMS symptoms. Be sure to add the essential oil just before you step into the tub and mix well. To help a little go a long way, add 1 or 2 drops rose essential oil to 2 cups sea salt.

Step 3

Make massage oil by adding 8 to 10 drops of rose essential oil to 2 tsps. of a carrier such as jojoba oil, which helps lessen redness and moisturize skin, according to Rose Magazine. Another option is to stir a few drops of rose essential oil into your facial cream to take advantage of its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. To help combat dark circles under your eyes, soak two cotton balls in cool water and sprinkle 2 or 3 drops rose essential oil. Place under your eyes and relax for about 10 minutes.

Step 4

Blend rose essential oils with other essential oils. For coping with grief, Dodt recommends adding to a warm bath 3 drops rose absolute, 3 drops lavender, 3 drops sweet marjoram and 1 drop cypress essential oils. Mix well. Another option is to add this same blend to ½ oz. base oil (jojoba, sweet almond or sesame carrier oils) and massage around your heart area.

Things You'll Need
