1. Start Your Day With a Healthy Dose of Fruit
Start off the first day of your 35-day weight loss plan with a piece of fruit. Select among these Beverly Hills Diet approved fruits: watermelon, strawberry, mango, kiwi, pineapple, persimmons, figs, apricots and grapes. Eat as much as you want, but only eat one type of fruit at a time. If you want to switch to another type of fruit, you need to wait 1 hour for proper digestion to occur. According to the rule of conscious combining, fruits should only be eaten in the early part of the day. Once you consume any other type of carbohydrate, you cannot eat fruit for the rest of the day. Wait two hours after eating your last piece of fruit before switching to carbohydrates.
2. Carb-Load to Your Heart's Content
Select carbohydrates from the approved list. According to author Judy Mazel's theory of conscious combining, carbohydrates take up to 3 hours for the body to digest, which is one reason to eat them after fruits that are digested almost immediately. During the 35-day initiation phase, you?ll get many of your carbohydrates from healthy vegetables like carrots, beets, asparagus, cabbage, cucumbers and tomatoes. You can also choose traditional carbohydrates like whole grains, pasta, corn on the cob, potatoes and rice, and even drink a little alcohol (except for wine, which is considered a fruit). You should only eat carbs with other carbs or with fats such as butter, olive oil, sour cream or mayonnaise.
3. Save the Meat for Last
Once you eat protein, the rest of your food for the day should be comprised of 80 percent protein based foods. According to Mazel, proteins take up to 10 hours to digest. These slow digesting foods should be eaten last to maximize your body?s natural fat burning mechanisms. Typical proteins include meats and cheeses, as well as eggs, fish, nuts and seeds and yogurt and milk. You can eat fats with your protein just like you did during the carbohydrate stage.
4. Planning a Once-a-Day Free-for-All
One meal a day should be your "open meal." This meal consists of any combination of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Do not include fruit in your open meal. In fact, you should not eat your open meal for at least 2 hours after you consume your last piece of fruit for the day. The New Beverly Hills Diet contains 21 different suggestions for open meals during your 35-day "Born Again Skinny" initial weight loss phase.
