Finding the best day care center for your child is a top priority of working parents. Day care centers vary greatly in quality meaning you must be thorough in researching a particular center before enrolling your little one. High quality centers also differ in what they offer in terms of activities and learning opportunities. Matching the style and atmosphere of a center to that of the parental home are often crucial aspects to consider as well.

Step 1

Start looking early so you will not be forced to make a rushed decision. Many parents make the mistake of waiting until a week or two before needing care to start looking for quality child care.

Step 2

Make a list of what you desire in a child care center. Some of things you will want to consider are size of the center, proximity to your home or work and whether the center has a religious or secular focus. Prioritize the list in case you cannot a facility that has everything you are looking for.

Step 3

Ask your friends and family for references when you begin your search for a day care center. Chances are you know others who have children in formal child care facilities. This gives you a starting place in your search.

Step 4

Contact local children's agencies for recommendations. These agencies can provide you with a ton of information regarding specific facilities which can help you narrow down your preliminary choices. Ask questions regarding the reputation of each facility for which you are given information.

Step 5

Call facilities for which you have received good information. Ask basic questions regarding such issues as fees, available space, philosophy and staff qualifications.

Step 6

Visit centers you believe are promising from your initial research. Ask to see current licensing. Pose key questions such as what is the staff-to-child ratio. Ask to see any written information such as handbooks or pamphlets regarding the facility. Interview with the director of the facility and caregivers.

Step 7

Check out the entire facility including playgrounds. Take a tour in which you note the cleanliness and upkeep of the entire location. Notice how the children and caregivers interact with each other.

Step 8

Schedule a second visit and bring your child so you can assess how he fits into the new environment. Judge his comfort level with the staff, other children and facility itself. Ask the director if your child can participate in activities and play. This will give you a good idea of whether the facility's environment is a good fit for your child.
