Anadrol-50 is one of the many brand names for the generic androgen which may be prescribed under specific circumstances. Androgens are produced as a natural male hormone that helps males develop sexually. Anadrol-50 may be used to make up for an inability of the body to produce the correct amount of androgen, to help spark puberty in male children who are late in development and also as part of treatment for female breast cancer. There are several other uses for the medicine, the Mayo Clinic reports.
Cancer
Although it is rare, using Anadrol-50 may cause problems in your liver. These side effects may include peliosis hepatis, tumors and cancer in your liver. The Mayo Clinic reports these as rare but possible and they can be fatal. Another potentially life-threatening rare side effect is prostate cancer stimulation. If it has not been diagnosed, but you have prostate cancer, Anadrol-50 can make it accelerate.
Women
Women can get side effects from taking Anadrol-50 as well as from their sexual partners who take the drug as a patch on the scrotum. These are serious and relatively common. Tell a doctor immediately. You can, for example, get growths of hair where you normally would not, or you could develop hair loss. You also may experience an enlargement of your genitals. Other serious common side effects in women include vocal deepening, hoarseness, menstrual cycles that become irregular, reduction in the size of your breasts and oily skin and acne.
Men
Men, who are the primary recipients of treatment with Anadrol-50, also may get serious common side effects. These may include skin redness and itching at the site of the patch or implants that can range from mild to severe. Other effects include enlargement or soreness of your breasts, increased need to urinate more frequently and painful, frequent and continual erections that may last as long as four hours.
Boys
Boys who take Anadrol-50 to spur their sexual development may experience such common serious side effects as frequent erections, penis enlargement, acne and pubic hair growth that comes early.
Other Side Effects
Anadrol-50 may cause side effects that are temporary and not considered serious unless they persist. The Mayo Clinic categorizes these as less common for both men and women. They include insomnia, mild acne, pain in the stomach, lowered libido, nervousness, diarrhea, thinning or loss of hair and an infection at the application site. Men also may experience a temporary reduction in the size of their testicles.
