When you go to college, you will have likely have heard of the "Freshman Fifteen." This term refers to the weight gain experienced by college students that eat poorly while living in dormitories and eating at dining halls. Making good food choices along with incorporating daily exercise into your routine can help you avoid this weight gain. Avoid crash dieting and fasting to stay trim in college, and instead choose healthier food options.

Step 1

Eat breakfast. It is common for college students to sleep later and skip the morning meal. Eating breakfast revs up your metabolism and prevents you from overeating later in the day. Choose low-fat options, like fruit, cereal, and whole grain bagel.

Step 2

Make food swaps. When browsing the dining hall selections, go for the leaner options. Instead of refined grains like white bread, go for whole grain selections like whole wheat bread. In lieu of whole milk, choose low-fat or skim milk.

Step 3

Keep fruit handy. If you crave something sweet or want something to munch on while you are studying, keep a variety of fruits handy. Apples, oranges, pears and bananas are portable and can be readily available when hunger strikes.

Step 4

Choose the healthiest selections from fast food restaurants. If people in the dorm are ordering fast foods, choose salads with low fat dressings, sandwiches with lean meats and plain slices of pizza.

Step 5

Drink a lot of water. Instead of hitting the vending machine for sodas and high-calorie sports drinks, drink water. Limit the amount of alcohol that you drink as well, because each serving typically has at least 100 calories.

Step 6

Stock your dorm fridge with easy-to-prepare and healthy foods. Store foods like diced vegetables, yogurt, low-fat cheese, skim milk and fruit.
