Itchy skin can be caused by numerous things, including fungus, yeast, insect bites and dry skin. Alleviating the itch can be done at home using a number of techniques. When the itch is due to an underlying health problem, the problem should be addressed as well. A fungal infection, for example, should be treated with anti-fungal medication but the skin irritation can be minimized until the infection is cured. Persistent itching should be examined by a medical professional to rule out any health concerns.
Step 1
Pour a generous cup of uncooked oatmeal, or colloidal oatmeal, into a warm bath. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes to calm irritated skin. A mask can be made by mixing the oatmeal with just enough water to form a paste. Apply this mask to the irritated skin for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
Step 2
Pat the skin dry. Apply a mild lotion free of dyes or fragrance. For skin irritation caused by a wound, insect bite or other specific injury, apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone to the area and cover with a fresh bandage or gauze, in place of the lotion.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine to block the itching sensation. This is especially helpful for cases of poison oak or poison ivy and other such irritants or allergic reaction.
