You shouldn't even consider trying to begin your labor until you are around 40 weeks pregnant or overdue, reports Dr. Spock. Your baby may not be ready to live outside the womb if you are not at or past your actual due date. There are several things that you can try to get your labor going, but these interventions will only work if your body is ready for labor. You should discuss any method of interest with your physician prior to trying them at home.
Walking and Climbing Stairs
Walking and climbing stairs may help get the body going into labor if your time is near. Walking allows your hips to sway side to side, which will help to bring the baby into the correct position to be born. By standing upright, you are using gravity to your advantage to help move the baby down into the pelvis. Once the baby's head is snuggled deep into the pelvis and his head is against the cervix, the process of labor may begin.
Sex
The last thing a woman at the end of her pregnancy may be thinking about is having sex. You are feeling uncomfortable as well as experiencing a lot of vaginal pressure. However, sperm contains natural prostaglandins. These prostaglandins may help to soften and prepare the cervix for dilation, possibly leading to contractions and labor.
Nipple Stimulation
For those who find sex just too uncomfortable right now, nipple stimulation may be a better choice, states Pregnancy Info. This works by causing a release of the hormone oxytocin which may begin uterine contractions necessary for labor to ensue.
Eating Pineapple or Spicy Foods
Although not medically proven, some women swear that eating spicy foods or pineapple may precipitate labor. So, if you are in the mood for some spicy Mexican cuisine, go for it! Just remember, being in labor after eating a large burrito may not be pleasant, as your epidural or anesthesia may cause nausea.
