Excedrin PM is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication indicated for the relief of symptoms caused by pain with sleeplessness in patients older than age 12. This medication contains two active ingredients: acetaminophen (analgesic) and diphenhydramine citrate (nighttime sleep aid). This medication is administered orally (caplets) and the product label for Excedrin PM warns that you should not take more than eight caplets within 24 hours. Side effects for Excedrin PM tend to be mild and should be discussed with your doctor if they occur.

Drowsiness

An intended side effect of Excedrin PM is drowsiness. This medication contains a nighttime sleep-aid, which causes sleepiness, drowsiness and fatigue to develop in most people. Additional side effects of Excedrin PM can include muscle weakness, dizziness or headache, which can contribute to symptoms of sleepiness. This medication should only be taken before your planned bedtime, as side effects of drowsiness and fatigue can significantly interfere with your ability to coherently complete daily tasks, such as driving a car.

Nausea

While taking this medication, you can experience stomach upset as a side effect. Mild nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite can occur during treatment with Excedrin PM due to the active ingredient diphenhydramine citrate. These symptoms typically subside within a few hours following treatment with this medication. If you experience severe nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, speak with your doctor immediately as these side effects may be indicative of an Excedrin PM overdose.

Dry Mouth

While taking Excedrin PM, you can experience dryness within your nasal and oral passageways. Sensations of dryness can develop within the throat, mouth or nose due to the presence of diphenhydramine citrate within this medication, explains Medline Plus, an online health information website established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). If such side effects occur, you can also experience additional symptoms of increased thirst, sore throat or sneezing.

Constipation

Excedrin PM can cause constipation to occur in some people. While taking this medication, you may find it difficult to have a bowel movement. Additional symptoms of constipation can include abdominal cramping, bloating or pain, which can contribute to symptoms of nausea or loss of appetite.
