1. Right Next to the Dairy Section
Ironically, so many people are looking for dairy-free products these days that grocery stores are storing alternative milks, creamers and butters right next to their natural counterparts. Soy milk is no longer an exotic food, and most markets carry it chilled in the dairy aisle. Similarly, you can find soy yogurt next to the regular, dairy-based yogurts. Many stores also now carry soy cheese next to the hard cheeses and lunch meats. If you don't see these items near the dairy, check out the natural foods section of your grocery store.
2. Or Find the Natural Foods Section
Most grocery stores now have a natural foods section. This can be one aisle of bulk foods, or an entire section of the store devoted to healthier food choices, body care and nutritional supplements. It's in this section that you'll find top dairy alternatives. You can find creamy soy milk, nut milks and even oat and rice milks. In the natural foods section, you'll find that boxes of crackers, loaves of bread and prepared frozen foods are often clearly labeled "non-dairy." This means you now have a place to find dairy-free products without having to scour the store and read every label.
3. Stores for Special Diets
Health food stores often have a wide range of dairy-free products, since vegetarians and vegans often prefer foods from sources that are animal-free. These stores can be ideal places to find almond milk, soy ice cream and even frozen rice-based treats. Most health food stores have an information desk where you can view lists of foods appropriate for special diets. Health food stores often also carry specialty cookbooks that can help you make your own nut milks and dairy-free meals. The important thing about homemade food is that you can be aware and in control of every ingredient, and not at the mercy of a food manufacturer.
