Acne can appear on any type of skin, including dry and mature skin types. When blemishes occur on mature skin, it can be difficult to know which products are the best to use, as many over-the-counter acne treatments dry out the skin. This can irritate mature skin. Fortunately, alternative skin treatments can be used together to clear acne on maturing skin, without drying out or irritating the skin.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin using a natural, fragrance-free soap. Wet the skin well with water, and lather the skin with the natural soap. Use your fingers to gently spread the lather around the face, then rinse off the lather with warm water. Repeat up to two times per day.

Step 2

Remove pore-clogging dead skin using a mildly abrasive exfoliant. Combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda, 1 tbsp. of ground raw oats and 2 tbsp. of honey in a small bowl. Spread the mixture onto wet skin, and gently massage it in using slow, circular motions with your fingers. Avoid rubbing the skin too aggressively, which can cause irritation. After two minutes, wipe the scrub back off into the bowl, and rinse off the skin with water. Exfoliate once per day after washing the skin.

Step 3

Treat acne breakouts directly using an antimicrobial oil. Fill a bottle with 8 oz. of water, and drop in 5 drops of pure tea tree oil. Shake the bottle well to combine the two substances. Soak a cotton ball in the diluted oil, then apply it to the areas affected by acne. Do not rub or scrub the skin, which can exacerbate acne and irritate the skin. Allow the diluted oil to completely soak in, and do not rinse it off. Repeat twice per day after the skin has been washed and exfoliated.

Tips and Warnings

  • Natural soaps that are free of artificial perfumes, dyes and preservatives will clean the skin without irritating or aggravating it. These soaps will not exacerbate dryness or wrinkling on mature skin types. Using a mildly abrasive exfoliant on the skin will slough away dead skin, oils and bacteria that could become clogged inside pores. Oats contain vitamin E, and are moisturizing, soothing and nourishing to the skin. This allows the skin to become exfoliated and soft at the same time. According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil kills off acne-causing bacteria, and can be used in place of chemical acne creams, such as benzoyl peroxide, without causing severe dryness, redness or peeling.
