Setting goals is essential in order to succeed in anything from business and acquiring wealth to parenting and everyday life. Most people have a general idea of what they want, but unless they zero in on specifics, they are likely to flounder in a sea of uncertainty. So to know what you want or where you'd like to be at in 10 years, be specific in your goal-setting session. Anyone involved in the ultimate goal should be included. Co-workers, family, athletic teams and organizations will benefit from putting their heads together to set goals.

Know the Goal

Decide on a goal that is specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and time-framed. People involved in the goal should know precisely what they want to achieve, how they'll know when the goal has been achieved, what activities are required to reach the goal, that it's realistic and how long it will take.

Willingness to Do What It Takes

Once you know what your goal is, decide if you're willing to do what it takes to achieve it. Having a higher income may require spending less time participating in recreational activities, for example, and sending the children to college may require a second job for a parent or a part-time job for the kids when they're old enough to work. Be aware of any obstacles and decide if they're worth working through.

Break the Goal Into Objectives

Once the goal is formed and you've decided you're willing to meet it, break the goal down into smaller bites called "objectives." If you want to double your income, you can't expect it to happen at your next job evaluation. You may have to take classes or get certified in a higher-paying field. It may require stepping stones from one job to another to get where you want to be. If your athletic team wants to win the league championship, and you're currently in last place, you'll need to formulate a plan to improve your skills and possibly do some special recruiting.

Focus and Commitment

Commit to your goals and focus on them regularly. For personal goals, make a daily journal entry regarding what you've done that day. Motivational reading and CDs may help you stay focused on what you want or need. Emotional involvement in your goal can help lift you up when things don't go as planned.

Act Toward Your Goal

Setting a goal, writing it down, commitment and focus are only good if you take action. Each day, do something to propel you closer to your goal. Follow through on your objectives.

Assess and Adjust

Periodically assess your goals and make adjustments as needed. Perhaps you've moved faster and see that the goal can be achieved sooner, or things may be heading in the other direction. Don't beat yourself up. Instead, after assessing the goal, make the necessary adjustments. If your priorities have changed, it's OK to change your goals.
