How to Treat Sore Gums With Vitamins

Sore gums, especially those that bleed, can be an indicator of periodontal disease, sometimes also called gingivitis. Gums that are sore and swollen can lead to infection and deterioration of the jawbone if left untreated. In addition to practicing good dental hygiene, you may be able to treat your sore gums by taking vitamins or increasing your consumption of foods that contain vitamin K.

Step 1

Ask your doctor if you are in danger of having a vitamin K deficiency. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this rare condition can cause your gums to bleed and become sore. Report any unusual bruising to your physician, as this can also be a sign of low vitamin K levels. Vitamin K plays an integral role in blood clotting.

Step 2

Take a vitamin K supplement if you are deficient. The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University states that adults should consume between 90 and 120 mcg of vitamin K daily, depending on their gender and age range. Supplements of this nutrient are available at grocery stores, pharmacies and health food stores.

Step 3

Treat sore gums with vitamin C as well as vitamin K. The Academy of General Dentistry reports that people who do not get enough vitamin C may also be at risk for sore gums and periodontal disease. Boosting your intake by 500 to 1,000 mg daily can help stimulate collagen production, which may help alleviate soreness. Collagen is a protein that supports the skin and also provides structure for your gums. Swishing a vitamin C-based mouthwash created from 1/2 tsp. of a crystallized form of the vitamin, mixed into orange juice or another citrus drink, can reduce swelling and pain.

Step 4

Increase your vitamin K and C intake through diet to treat your sore gums. Citrus fruits are good food sources for vitamin C. Vitamin K can be found in cauliflower, Swiss chard, brussels sprouts, beef and pork. Broccoli contains both vitamins.
