Taping the blade of your hockey stick blade helps cushion the blade, making it easier to gain and keep control of the puck. Taping your stick's blade may also help you when passing, shooting and stick-handling because of the increased friction--that is, control--between the hockey stick and the puck. With cloth hockey tape available in a variety of colors and prints, you can even turn your taped stick into a personal statement if you so desire.
Step 1
Peel the end off the roll of hockey tape. Adhere this end as close to the tip of your stick's blade as you can get it, with the tape oriented perpendicularly to the blade.
Step 2
Wrap the tape once around the very end of the stick so that it adheres to itself.
Step 3
Continue wrapping up the blade toward the heel, making evenly spaced spirals so that the tape lays as flat and neat against the blade as possible. Smooth the tape against the blade of the stick as you go so that it adheres evenly.
Step 4
Rip the tape off the roll once you've reached the heel of the blade--that is, the joint where the blade meets the rest of the stick and makes an angle. Smooth the end of the tape down, then run your hands across the blade to smooth out any air wrinkles in the rest of the tape.
Tips and Warnings
- Check with your coach to find out whether there are any team or league rules about what color tape you can use on your hockey stick. Some players like to use white tape that contrasts with the black puck, making it easier to see against the blade, while other players may prefer to tape their hockey stick blades black to camouflage against the puck.
