Eye puffiness is caused by humidity, changing hormones, lack of sleep and allergic reactions. It can occur when fluid gathers around the eye area, resulting in redness and swollen skin under one or both eyes. Sometimes eye puffiness occurs as a result of aging or an overconsumption of salt that causes water retention. Steps can be taken to reduce eye puffiness, which is usually only a cosmetic issue, at home without seeing a doctor.

Step 1

Splash your face with cool water and then apply a chilled substance to your eye. You can use damp tea bags, chilled spoons, a damp cloth or cucumber slices. Leave the substance on your eye for about five minutes off and on throughout the day.

Step 2

Tap the area under your eye gently. This will make the fluid move elsewhere.

Step 3

Drink a lot of water. Salt can cause water retention and puffiness under your eye, and hydration will flush the salt away.

Step 4

Talk to your doctor about taking an antihistamine if you think the puffiness under your eye is the result of an allergy.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try sleeping with your head on top of an extra pillow. This will keep fluids from accumulating around your eye. If puffiness under one eye is a long-term problem and you think you may be allergic to your pillow, sheets or blankets, try changing materials to see if there is a difference. You can help reduce puffiness under your eye by getting enough sleep each night. You can use a concealer to cover up puffiness or darkness under your eye.
  • Avoid drinking fluids just before bedtime. This will reduce the amount of fluid that can accumulate around your eye.
