The body is exposed to numerous toxins daily in the form of pollutants, processed foods, pesticides and chemicals. Detox diets endeavor to help the liver, kidneys and lymphatic system rid these toxins from the body. Many formulas for detoxification exist, and although none has been supported in clinical studies, there may be merit to cleaning up your diet and increasing your intake of certain healthy foods. Many health experts, including CBS contributer and registered dietitian Keri Glassmen, support a temporary detox diet that emphasizes whole, natural foods.
Step 1
Plan your detox diet for a few days during which you have no major commitments or activities planned. Scale back on exercise during your detox. Laying low may help you deal with any digestive discomfort due to increased fiber intake and caffeine withdrawal as well as help you reduce temptation to cheat. Avoiding stress also improves the efficacy of the body's natural detoxifying systems.
Step 2
Eliminate all caffeine, added sugars and artificial sweeteners. Do not drink alcohol or smoke. Drink mostly water---go for 8 oz. every hour or two. You may also drink herbal tea or freshly squeezed juice for drinks.
Step 3
Eat only whole foods that are close to nature. Choose fresh produce and fruits, unseasoned whole grains and lean proteins. Make fruits and vegetables like beets, radishes, cabbage, broccoli and seaweed the bulk of your diet and eat them raw as much as possible to maximize the nutrients and fiber. Accent your meals with steamed brown rice or quinoa and, if you choose to eat meat, a couple ounces of fish or grass-fed lamb.
Step 4
Shun salt and soy sauce. Go for herbs, citrus and vinegar for flavorings.
Step 5
Snack on raw, unsalted nuts. These provide protein, healthy monounsaturated fats and satiation.
Step 6
Maintain your detox for up to a week. Return to a more mainstream diet slowly as shocking your system with a fatty, processed meal immediately may upset your digestive system.
