Puffy eyes and dark circles can be caused by many different factors, the most common of which include fatigue, disease or illness, heredity or allergies. When the eyes become puffy and swollen, it can cause the entire face to look more tired and aged than it actually is. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the swelling around the eyes, and diminish the appearance of dark circles. By following this routine regularly, you can help your eyes look more rested and youthful.
Step 1
Reduce puffiness around the eyes by applying cucumber slices. Refrigerate a cucumber for at least one hour, then cut two slices off of the cucumber using a small knife. Each slice should be about 1/8-inch thick. Place one cucumber slice onto each eye, and allow it to remain there for at least 10 minutes. Remove the slices and let the skin air-dry. Repeat twice per day.
Step 2
Diminish dark circles by applying black tea bags to the eyes. Soak two black tea bags in cool water, then squeeze out the excess water using your fingers. Place the tea bags onto the eyes, and allow them to remain there for 15 minutes. Remove the bags, and rinse off the skin with water. Repeat twice per day.
Step 3
Decrease inflammation by applying ice cubes to the eyes. Wrap two ice cubes in a thin towel, and apply the ice cubes to the eyes for around 10 minutes. If the ice feels too cold on the skin, remove it sooner. Avoid pressing the ice cubes into the eyes. Remove the ice cubes and pat the skin dry with the towel. Repeat twice per day.
Tips and Warnings
- Cucumbers contain properties that act as a decongestant to the skin, and can be helpful in reducing puffiness around the eyes. Refrigerating the cucumbers before application helps further reduce swelling. Black tea contains caffeine, which can shrink the capillaries in the skin. When applied to dark circles, black tea can reduce redness and inflammation, which can cause the skin to appear darker. Because black tea can stain the skin, it is important to rinse off the skin after application. Ice decreases swelling and inflammation on the skin, but should be wrapped in a thin towel before use so that you do not experience pain or discomfort from the application.
