Maintaining a positive attitude can be difficult, especially when life gets tough. But the benefits of staying positive are well worth the effort. Barbara Fredrickson, an investigator at the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, concludes from her research that practicing positivity improves relationships and daily life. In order to put positive energy to work for you, follow these tips.

Be Grateful

Be thankful for what you have by keeping a gratitude journal. Every day, write down five things you are grateful for, which can range from your health to seeing your children or enjoying a tasty meal. Keeping a record of everything you have to be thankful for will help you stay positive when circumstances get hard. Soon you'll start realizing that your life is full of gifts, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem on the surface. Being grateful will help you dwell on the positive situations in your life instead of the negative ones.

Have Faith

It doesn't matter if you follow certain religious beliefs or are agnostic, but believing that things will get better during difficult times will help you thrive. If you are religious, you can find extra support and guidance at your place of worship. There are also plenty of other places to find strength, ranging from counseling to meditation and writing. Practice an activity or join a group that makes you feel satisfied and encouraged, which will help you maintain a positive outlook on life.

Be Kind

Be kind to yourself and others. If you tend to be hard on yourself or very critical of others, you have a recipe for unhappiness. Practice being positive by focusing on what you like about yourself and others. Look at yourself in the mirror every day and give yourself at least one compliment. Compliment the people around you as well, showing them you appreciate their strengths. The more you compliment yourself and others, the more positive energy you will generate, which will encourage others to react favorably to you and increase your overall happiness.

Positive People

Surround yourself with positive people, and you'll find it easier to remain upbeat. Avoid negative people if you can because they will drag you down. If you can't avoid overly critical or unpleasant people, think of them as opportunities to practice your positive thinking techniques and think of a positive for everything they complain about. Dwelling on the positive will magnify the good in your life and help you stay positive no matter what the circumstances.
