Male infertility contributes to half of all infertility cases, according to the American Pregnancy Association. A low sperm count, also known as ogligospermia, is a contributing factor to male infertility. In addition to consumption of tobacco and alcohol and use of tight underwear and hot tubs, all things that can cause a low sperm count, not enough consumption of certain types of foods can contribute as well. Men who have a zinc deficiency and do not obtain enough proteins and vitamins each day, such as Vitamins A, E, C and B12, can experience a low sperm count.
Fish
Many types of fish contain a variety of ingredients that will help reverse a low sperm count. Omega 3 fatty acids increase blood flow, which can raise sperm count. Fish with high levels of omega 3 fatty acids include sardines, anchovies and herring. Fish with high levels of zinc include oysters, lobster and crab, and tuna has an ingredient that increases sperm count called selenium. Most types of fish have high levels of vitamin A as well.
Meat and Eggs
Meat, including turkey, chicken, pork and beef, can be a good source of zinc. Vitamin A is found in both liver and eggs. Eggs also have high levels of vitamin B12 and selenium, the same ingredient found in tuna that can increase sperm count. Whenever possible, organic meats and eggs should be chosen to avoid fertilizers and pesticides that can affect fertility.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants, which work to get rid of free radicals in the body that stress out the tissues, impairing sperm production. Fruits and vegetables loaded with vitamin C include berries, grapefruit, potatoes, asparagus and juices from oranges and lemons. Broccoli, kale, peppers, carrots and oranges all contain high levels of Vitamin A, and broccoli is also a good source of folic acid. Like meats and eggs, organic types of fruits and vegetables are available as well.
Nuts, Seeds and Supplements
Nuts, such as peanuts, walnuts and cashews, are high in levels of zinc and vitamin E. Certain seeds, such as a daily quarter cup of raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds, are considered to increase sperm count. Vitamin supplements can also help to raise levels of Vitamin C, E, B23 and zinc.
