There are several troubleshooting techniques you can use if your treadmill stops working. Fixing the treadmill on your own can often save you the cost of a service visit. If you are unable to fix the problem on your own, call the customer service line of the treadmill's manufacturer. The representative can provide instructions or send a repair kit to fix the problem. For more detailed instructions specific to your treadmill model, refer to your owner's manual.
Step 1
Unplug the treadmill. Wait 30 seconds and then plug it back into the wall. This can often resolve power issues or a frozen display screen. If the outlet does not seem to be getting power, check your household fuses to see if any has blown. Reset your circuit breaker as well.
Step 2
Adjust the tension of the belt. If the belt is too loose, it can cause you to slip while running on the treadmill. At the base of the treadmill, you should find bolts that control the tension of the belt. Tighten the belt a quarter of a turn with an Allen wrench. Turn the treadmill on the lowest speed to recheck the tension to see if the tightening resolved the issue.
Step 3
Lubricate the belt of the treadmill. If you notice a lot of friction when using the treadmill, it may be time to lube the belt. Treadmill lubricant solutions can be purchased through any sporting goods store. Lift the belt and apply an even and thin layer to each side of the treadmill. The lubricant should not be placed on the surface of the belt.
Step 4
Clean the interior of the treadmill. If you notice a burning smell, dirt and debris may have built up on your treadmill's motor. Unscrew the bolts of the treadmill to access the motor. The unit should be unplugged prior to cleaning. Use a can of compressed air to remove any dirt that has built up inside the motor compartment.
