Digestion and Probiotics
The digestive track is a system that breaks down food and separates valuable nutrients from waste so the nutrients can be absorbed by the body. The unneeded waste is eliminated. Yogurt cultures contain "good bacteriam" or probiotics, which are live microorganisms that improve the health of the host (person who consumes the probiotics). Probiotics dwell in the gut (a part of the digestive tract) and help break down foods that enter and fight off unhealthy bacteria and yeast. There can be a variety of microbes found in yogurt but the most common strains are Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus.
Streptococcus Thermophilus
Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria fight lactic acid bacteria that can interfere with proper digestion and upset the stomach. Streptococcus thermophilus can soothe symptoms of lactose intolerance by eliminating "bad" bacteria.
Lactobacillus
Lactobacillus bacterium helps the body absorb nutrients, particularly those found in dairy products. It also helps breaks down toxins and improves metabolism, which directly improves digestion. Both lactobacillus and streptococcus create a barrier between harmful bacteria and the lining of the digestive tract, relieving digestive pain. They also help lactose, which can inhibit proper digestion
