The body's immune system has many built-in mechanisms that work together to protect our bodies from attacking bacteria, viruses and other invaders. Phagocytes, macrophages and lymphocytes seek out and destroy invading antigens, while the lymphatic drainage system works to flush them from the body.
It Protects the Body
The immune system of the human body functions to keep the body healthy and working at maximum efficiency. Its many components work together to destroy antigens and invading cells that cause infection and disease. The spleen works as a warehouse for white blood cells and other cells that are needed at a moment's notice when an invader is detected in the body. Symptoms such as fever and inflammation also have their place in the immune system. Fevers raise the body's temperature to a point where the invading antigens can't survive, while inflammation pulls oxygenated blood to the area of an injury to protect it and allow it to begin to heal. Proper diet, nutrition and exercise are vital in keeping the immune system healthy and working properly.
The immune system works with the skin (integumentary system) to help keep out unwanted invaders that enter through wounds or lesions. The cilia that line the throat and nasal passages help to filter the air of unwanted guests, such as pollen and other airborne allergens.
It Works Best With Good Diet and Nutrition
Proper diet and nutrition are needed to maintain the immune system so that it can protect our bodies. Adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals and water are needed to keep normal amounts of bacteria in check, as well as fight off new invaders. Exercise is also needed to keep the circulation of the blood at optimum levels. Blood carries nutrients to the body and carries away waste. Along with the circulatory system, the lymphatic system also circulates better when a person exercises on a regular basis. The lymphatic drainage system carries away waste and allows other aspects of the immune system to work more efficiently.
Positive attitude boosts the immune system as well. When a person is happy and healthy, the body releases endorphins. Endorphins help the body alleviate stress and reduce its effects on the immune system.
It's Weakened by Unhealthy Habits
Anything that takes away from the general health of the individual can weaken the immune system. Poor diet and nutrition, lack of exercise and depression can wear down the body and make it more susceptible to disease.
Exposure to toxins can reduce the amount of white blood cells in the body and limit their ability to fight cellular invaders.
Stress can also break down the body's defenses so that it's unable to adequately protect the body from disease and infection.
Lack of sleep prohibits the body from recharging itself and can make the immune system sluggish and ineffective.
