Adipex (generic name: phentermine; brand names: Adipex-P, Fastin, Ionamin, Obenix, Obephen, Oby-Cap, Oby-Trim, Panshape M, Phentercot, Phentride, Pro-Fast HS, Pro-Fast SA, Pro-Fast SR, Teramine and Zantryl) is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It is used to control appetite as part of a weight-loss program that also includes exercise and a proper diet. Individuals who have diabetes and high cholesterol are also sometimes prescribed Adipex to help them control their appetite while they lose weight.
Mild to Moderate Side Effects
Mild to moderate side effects include anxiousness, dizziness, insomnia and dry mouth. Diarrhea and constipation may also occur. Itching can be a side effect, but if it becomes severe and hives or a rash appears, contact your physician immediately.
Moderate to Serious
Moderate to serious side effects of Adipex are feelings of restlessness or confusion, chest pains, and fast or uneven heartbeat. Adipex may also cause an increase in blood pressure. If you start to experience numbness, blurred vision and severe headache, consult a physician.
Severe Side Effects
Consult a physician immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. These may be signs of anaphylactic shock. If these signs appear, go to the nearest emergency room as soon as possible.
Miscellaneous Side Effects
Adipex may be habit forming, so prolonged use should be monitored by a physician. Do not stop taking Adipex without your physician's knowledge, as withdrawal symptoms can occur if the dosage is not reduced gradually. Do not take this medication with alcohol. Alcohol can increase or enhance some of the side effects that you already may be experiencing. In some cases, Adipex may cause drowsiness.
