Many foods such as broths, gravies and drippings from meat are very high in fat. A fat separator is a device that can be used to remove liquid fat from these foods. Resembling a measuring cup, the fat separator is made of clear glass or plastic with a measure on the side. Unlike a measuring cup, which pours from the top, the fat separator has a spout connected at the bottom. This allows heavier liquids that have separated from the fat to be poured off leaving behind the fat that has floated to the top.
Step 1
Allow the broth, gravy, meat drippings or other hot liquid with fat in it to rest so that the fat rises to the surface. Ladle the majority of the separated fat from the liquid.
Step 2
Carefully pour the remaining liquid into the fat separator to prevent the fat from re-mixing with the hot liquid.
Step 3
Allow the contents of the fat separator to rest a few minutes so the remaining fat can separate. Ensure the fat has separated by looking for the fat floating on top of the liquid in the separator.
Step 4
Hold the spout of the fat separator over a container. Carefully tip the separator forward to pour the liquid from the bottom. Watch the process carefully and stop pouring when only the fat remains.
