Acne can strike at any age, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne occurs when an overproduction of oil (sebum) mixes with dead skin cells and blocks the pores, causing bacteria to grow. The resulting inflammation results in pimples on the skin. Some possible triggers for adult acne include fluctuating hormones, stress and certain medications or cosmetics. Essential oils, distilled from flowers and plants, offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and restorative qualities that can help treat adult acne.

Tea Tree

Mayo Clinic dermatologist Dr. Lawrence E. Gibson recommends tea tree essential oil for treating acne. As an antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory, tea tree essential oil is a common remedy found in first-aid kits and is from the melaleuca tree in Australia. Use a cotton swab to apply tea tree essential oil directly to the affected areas. Dr. Gibson warns against using tea tree essential oil for acne rosacea, which includes redness on the face and red-toned pimples, as it may aggravate the symptoms.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent qualities. Its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe itchy or irritated skin. As an astringent, lavender essential oil can unblock pores by cleaning out the impurities below the skin's surface. Before using lavender essential oil on your skin, dilute it with a carrier oil (jojoba or sesame oil are good). Essential oils are very potent and may irritate skin if applied directly. Add tea tree oil to the mixture for especially stubborn pimples.
Another way to enjoy the benefits of lavender essential oil---since adult acne may appear on the arms, back and chest---is to add a few drops to your bath and soak for about 15 minutes.

Helichrysum

Although it's a bit expensive, helichrysum essential oil is good for mature skin because of its antibacterial and cell-rejuvenating properties. Helichrysum is also a popular choice for toning the skin and reducing the appearance of scars. Mix with a carrier oil such as rose-hip seed oil (which contains skin-regenerating vitamin A) before using.

Clove

A study published in the January 2009 issue of the Archives of Dermatology recommends clove oil as an antibacterial for treating acne. Because clove essential oil is exceptionally strong, be sure to mix with a carrier, such as grape seed oil. Or you can add a few drops to a bowl of boiling water and place a towel over your head for a five-minute steam facial.
