Unwanted facial hair is a major cause for concern and embarrassment for some women. What starts as fine, light hairs before puberty can grow into coarser, darker, longer hairs as women age. Fortunately, women don't have to live with the problem if they don't want to. There are many ways to get rid of unwanted facial hair.
Step 1
Use a razor and shaving cream or an electric razor to trim off the unwanted hair. Some razors are specifically designed for women's facial hair.
Step 2
Use tweezers. This is the most common method for facial hair removal, but it's best for women who don't have an excessive amount of hair, considering that each hair has to be plucked out one at a time. Results last slightly longer than shaving because hairs are removed down to the root, rather than just at the surface level.
Step 3
Try waxing. Visit a salon or spa to have a technician use this technique. She will apply hot wax to your face, rub a cloth over the wax, then wait for it to set and remove the strip -- with the unwanted hair stuck to it. You can also try a wax kit at home.
Step 4
Use an epilator. Several types of epilators are on the market. Some use metal coils to ensnare the hair, some use several mini-tweezers and some use rotating discs. This method can be painful, particularly at first, but it is faster than trying to remove hairs one at a time.
Step 5
Use a hair removal cream. Many companies, such as Avon, Sally Hansen and Nair, make creams specifically for facial hair removal. Typically, you apply the cream for less than 10 minutes, then rinse it off and apply a moisturizer.
Step 6
Get a prescription cream. Your doctor can prescribe Vaniqa, a cream that slows hair growth. It won't prevent regrowth, but you will not have to deal with hair removal as often.
Step 7
Try laser hair removal. The FDA recognizes several laser products as permanent hair reduction methods, though not permanent hair removal methods. Depending on your type of hair, your complexion and other factors, you may have long-lasting effects from laser hair removal, or your hair may grow back quickly.
Step 8
Try electrolysis, which is the only permanent method for hair removal recognized by the FDA. The electrologist uses a small needle that sends a short-wave current to the base of the hair follicle, destroying the follicle's ability to regenerate. The follicles must be destroyed one at a time, so this can be a lengthy process.
