Wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer are all direct results of overexposure to the sun. Excessive sun exposure creates tough leathery skin and adds years to your actual age. Protect your skin year-round by implementing a variety of skin-protecting tips and techniques. According to Moores Cancer Center at the University of San Diego, skin damage is irreversible: "The skin never forgets."
Step 1
Always apply sunscreen. Remember to use one with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher. Massage the sunscreen into the skin 30 minutes prior to going outside. Reapply as necessary, at least every two hours. Add additional sunscreen if participating in water activities or physical exercise. Do not forget areas such as the nose, tips of the ears and the hairline. Use a lip balm with sunscreen for your lips. Remember that sunscreen only has a shelf life of one year; purchase new sunscreen on a yearly basis.
Step 2
Avoid the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun's UV rays are strongest, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Plan outdoor activities in the early morning or evening.
Step 3
Use skin-protecting accessories. Wear a wide-brim hat to protect your face from the sun. Always use an umbrella for shade and protection when visiting the beach. Sunglasses with UV protection help deter harmful rays from penetrating the delicate eye area. Wear long-sleeve loose clothing and pants. Look for items made from lightweight fabrics to wear during the summer.
Step 4
Use sunscreen even when the sun isn't shining, including during the wintertime. Snow, water and other reflective sources can spread UV rays and cause sunburn. Know that UV rays are invisible, and skin can burn even on cloudy days.
Tips and Warnings
- Sunscreens come in a variety of applications, from spray-on mists to waterproof gels. Teach young children about the importance of applying sunscreen at an early age so that it becomes a habit.
- Remember that all skin types, from light to dark skin, can be affected by harmful UV rays.
