Food allergies vary in type and intensity and usually develop within minutes or up to two hours after the allergen is consumed. According to the Mayo Clinic, the ideal time to see a doctor regarding a potential allergy is while the reaction is occurring. Regardless, proper medical testing is suggested when food allergies are suspected.

Tingling or Itching

After a food one is allergic to is consumed, tingling may occur in the mouth. Itching may occur on the skin, often accompanied by hives (a bumpy rash) or eczema (flaky or itchy skin). According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, reactions such as itching may be treated through a doctor-recommended, over-the-counter antihistamine or topical anti-itch creams. If you experience itching in response to particular foods, talk with your doctor about proper allergy testing before attempting to treat symptoms on your own.

Swelling

Consuming a food allergen may result in inflammation, or swelling, of the lips, eyelids, face, tongue, throat, mouth or other body parts. If you experience severe swelling, the Mayo Clinic suggests immediate medical attention, as swelling may be indicative of anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, a potentially life-threatening condition involving airway restriction, dizziness or shock.

Digestive Problems

Digestive difficulties, such as stomach cramping, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting are also common food allergy symptoms. These symptoms range from mild to severe in intensity. Because such symptoms may also be indicative of food poisoning, flu viruses and other conditions, proper testing and diagnosis is recommended. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, allergy treatment often includes avoidance of food allergens. Seek supervision from your doctor if an elimination diet, or diet devoid of potential food allergens, is suggested.
