A baseball glove is more than just a tool to help a player get the job done in the field. Most baseball players regard their baseball glove with some intimacy. As a result, when they get a new glove, players work to mold it and form it the way they want. Breaking in a glove is a baseball tradition. Forming a flexible pocket that allows you to hold onto anything you get your hands on gives a player great security when he is on the field.

Step 1

Spread shaving cream generously all over the glove. Shaving cream will moisturize the leather in your glove and make it more flexible. Put a generous amount in the pocket and put it all over the glove, including the fingers. After 15 minutes, put a baseball in the pocket and tie it securely with a rope.

Step 2

Leave the tied-up glove with the baseball in the pocket for at least eight hours. Then, untie the glove and play catch for at least 20 minutes for initial break-in.

Step 3

Spread shaving cream in the pocket again. Spread the cream generously all over the glove, including the pocket and fingers. Place a ball in the middle and tie it up again. Leave it tied for at least eight hours.

Step 4

Break in the glove once again by playing catch. Do this for at least 20 minutes. If you can play catch with someone who can throw hard you have a good chance to get your glove loose and flexible.

Step 5

Spread glove oil all over your glove. Pour the oil in the pocket and work it in with your fingers. Dry the excess of with a towel. Go out and play catch or play a game. Your glove should be good to go.

Tips and Warnings

  • Pour glove oil in your glove and work it in if you have had exceptionally dry weather for several days. This will help keep your glove during the hottest days and allow you to play your best defensive baseball.
