Nexavar is the brand name for sorafenib, which is used in the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma or kidney cancer and for patients suffering from liver cancer when there is no surgical option, the Mayo Clinic notes. Nexavar is a prescription medication administered as a pill, usually in 400mg doses twice per day. For all serious side effects of Nexavar, the Mayo Clinic recommends contacting your physician immediately.
Bleeding
Serious side effects of Nexavar include bleeding in several forms. Those forms classified as more common serious effects include bleeding from the gums, a cough that produces blood, nosebleeds, bleeding longer than normal from wounds or cuts and vomiting blood. It also may produce blood in your urine or feces. The signs of these side effects are tar-like stools that are black or possibly red, and urine discoloration, usually to dark brown and red. If you are a woman, you may experience heavy flow during menstruation or bleeding from the vagina between periods.
Bodyily Effects
Nexavar can cause some serious side effects that can affect various portions of your body. For example, your abdomen may bloat, you may find breathing difficult and you may hear pounding noises in your ears. Bradycardia (reduced heart rate) and tachycardia (increased heart rate) also are more common serious side effects. Very serious side effects include paralysis and seizures, the former being common and the latter being less common. Other less-common serious effects, the Mayo Clinic notes, include chills, itching, stiffness and cramps in your muscles, indigestion and appetite loss, pale or clammy skin, sweating, swelling in your glands or joints, abnormal tiredness and weakness, abnormal bleeding and bruising, blurry vision and weight gain.
Pain
Pain also is a serious side effect of taking Nexavar. You may experience it in your abdomen, as headaches that may be severe, pain in your chest that can be severe, pain in your bones and pain in your joints. You also may feel pain when urinating.
Other Serious Side Effects
There are many other potential serious side effects of Nexavar. More common are dizziness, vomiting and nausea, nervousness and jaundice, which is evident by your skin or eyes turning yellow. Less common are mental confusion, a depressed mood, bodily motion problems, loss of hair or hearing, and a fever.
