A common cause of a toddler earache is a buildup of pressure in the eustachian tube, the canal that links the external ear to the inner ear, states the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine. Colds, allergies or other respiratory illnesses can cause fluid drainage that can buildup in the ear. The pain can be mild to moderate. Home remedies are effective in relieving the discomfort a toddler experiences with an earache. When a fever or other signs of infection are present, it is advisable to seek medical treatment.

Oral Medication

With the approval of a medical professional, you can give a toddler oral medications, such as pain relievers, to treat an earache. This may not relieve the underlying cause of the pain, but it can temporarily reduce the discomfort. Closely follow the indications provided by a medical professional, since the toddler is so small. If an earache persists for more than two days, seek medical treatment to relieve the cause of the pain.

Heat

Warming a cloth with warm water and placing it over a toddler's ear can diminish pain, states the Mayo Clinic. Should the earache be caused by wax buildup, the warm moisture can help soften the wax so it can move out of the ear. A steamy shower can also provide this type of treatment. A heating pad or blanket may provide a toddler with some temporary relief.

Ear Drops

Warm a natural oil, such as olive oil as sesame oil, by placing it inside a cup of warm water. Once the oil has warmed, place a few drops into the affected ear to help diminish pain and soften wax stuck in the ear. Natural Home Remedies suggests making pain relief drops by heating a teaspoonful of sesame oil and half a clove of garlic until it becomes warm.
