Nothing can prepare an individual for the first-time snowshoeing experience. It grabs hold of you and will never let go. The peaceful, serene environment one finds themselves in renews the spirit and invigorates the body. Snowshoeing is an activity all can enjoy when equipped with the right pair of snowshoes.
Width
Aluminum-framed snowshoes come in multiple sizes. The first number listed will be a number referring to the width of the snowshoe or distance from one side of the snowshoe to the other side of the snowshoe.
Length
The second number refers to the length of the snowshoe, or the distance between the front and back of the snowshoe.
Function
Snowshoes distribute an individual's weight over a large surface area to maintain floatation on top of the snow. Having the correct size of snowshoe ensures that you will get maximum floatation while not tripping over them because they are too big to hike or walk with.
Recommended Load
The carrying capacity or recommended load of the snowshoe refers to your weight plus the weight of anything you will be carrying with you. This weight range is found on the packaging. To buy a snowshoe that is suitable for you at your normal weight is a mistake. Remember you will be in full winter clothing, boots and typically carrying a backpack, ski equipment or a hydration system.
Gender Specific
Women tend to have a different gait than men, and this is reflected in women-specific snowshoes resulting in a slightly narrower frame. Men's snowshoes are generally able to fit a larger boot and carry heavier loads.
