Bee pollen is a nutritious food source rich in vitamins and minerals. It contains most of the B-complex vitamins, along with vitamins A, C and E. Bee pollen also contains essential fatty acids, amino acids, beneficial enzymes and a wide variety of minerals, according to Sunflower Organics. Beekeepers collect this pollen from supplies that bees have extracted from flowers. Bee pollen is available from natural food stores as a supplement in capsules and powder form.
Step 1
Choose a high-quality bee pollen powder. Bee pollen powder produced in the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand should be from a good manufacturing practice (GMP) compliant facility, according to BeePollenSecrets.com. The powder should not contain additives such as sucrose, starch, gluten, silica and artificial colors, dyes or flavors. Some brands of bee pollen powder come with other healthy ingredients such as spirulina and wheat grass. If you don't want these ingredients in the powder, be sure to read labels.
Step 2
Take 1/8 tsp. bee pollen powder to start. You'll begin with a small dosage to discover whether you experience any side effects. People who are allergic to pollen or to bees may develop side effects, which will be milder with a small amount of pollen.
Step 3
Take the bee pollen powder as you start your day. Take it before breakfast or with breakfast. You may sprinkle bee pollen powder on cold or room-temperature food, or mix it with orange juice. If you like the flavor, you can simply take it with some water.
Step 4
Increase your bee pollen dosage over the next several days. Follow the directions on the container, which may recommend taking up to 1 tsp. or 1 tbsp. per day. You may split up the dosage and take some in the afternoon for an energy boost.
Tips and Warnings
- Children should take no more than 1/2 tsp. of bee pollen each day. Do not take bee pollen with hot food or beverages, because heat can degrade some of the healthful enzymes it contains.
- Some people experience allergic reactions to bee pollen if they are allergic to plant pollen. Signs include wheezing, headache, dizziness, itchy throat and hives. If you know you have an allergy to bees, consult a doctor before taking bee pollen powder. People allergic to bees may not be able to safely take this supplement.
