Karate belts are the most significant piece of martial arts attire because of what they symbolize. These belts are arranged in a hierarchy according to color, and these belts are assigned to various levels of mastery. Equally important as wearing the belt is doing so in the proper way--karate belts have a specific way of being tied that should be adhered to by any respectful practitioners of martial arts. Tying a karate belt is easy once you familiarize yourself with the process.
Step 1
Hold the label end of the belt flat against your stomach. Let the label end hang down from your hand a few inches farther than you would like it to hang once tied. Bring the rest of the belt around your backside and to your stomach, making sure the belt is flat against your body all the way around. Make a second loop around your body and hold one end of the belt in each hand. The label end should be in your right hand and the non-label end in your left.
Step 2
Bring the non-label end across your stomach past where the label end hangs and tuck it under and up over both loops around your waist. Tug each end of the belt to tighten this knot.
Step 3
Fold the non-label end down over the loops of your belt so that both belt ends are pointed towards the ground. Tuck the label end of your belt under the other end with the label pointed out away from your body. Loop the label end around the other end of the belt, then through the loop you've created and to the right side of your body.
Step 4
Pull downward to tighten the belt. Each belt end should hang the same length down from the knot. If they are different lengths, loosen the knot and make adjustments by tugging one end until the ends are the same length.
