3 Ways to Understand How the Beverly Hills Diet Works

1. Combining the Right Foods for Weight Loss

Conscious combining is the core principle of the Beverly Hills Diet. The theory of conscious food combining suggests that the time of day you eat and the foods you pair up have a profound effect on weight loss. When you eat the right combination of foods, you improve the digestive process and you help the potent enzymes in food break down nutrients more efficiently. Conscious combining may help you reduce feelings of post meal fatigue, improve energy levels, cut down on bloating and enhance weight loss. The "New Beverly Hills Diet" is based on a 35-day plan, during which time dieters can expect to lose anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds according to author Judy Mazel.

2. Follow the Diet Plan

Rather than counting calories or measuring portions, you eat foods from four different groups. The basic principle of conscious combining states that fruits are eaten alone, carbohydrates are eaten with other carbohydrates (plus fats) and proteins are eaten with other proteins (plus fats). During the 35-Day "Born Skinny Again" phase of the diet, you start every day off with a piece of fruit. Choose from a specific list of fruits that includes papayas, pineapples, mangoes, kiwi, strawberries, watermelon, figs, apricots and grapes. Make sure you only eat one type of fruit at a time and you wait 1 hour before switching to another type of fruit. Once you've eaten your last piece of fruit for the day, wait 2 hours and then switch to carbohydrates. You can eat as many carbohydrate based foods as you like, but as soon as you eat even a little protein, the rest of your meals should be comprised of mostly protein. You can also choose one "open meal" per day, which can include carbohydrates, proteins and fat, but no fruit.

3. Maintain Your Initial Weight Loss

Keep the weight off with the lifetime maintenance plan. Mix up the foods you eat to keep every day a surprise. Avoid the original diet plan, which encouraged dieters to eat only fruit for 10 days, and follow the new plan instead. Avoid any restrictions in your diet, or you may experience the crash that so often comes with fad diets. Increase your daily caloric intake over time by introducing more fats and proteins into your diet. Begin a regular workout routine to keep your body tone and your metabolism high.
