Ambien, a treatment tool for insomnia, is prescribed for patients who have problems getting enough sleep. The drug is only prescribed for temporary use. Numerous side effects and dangers are associated with Ambien use, ranging from mild to very serious. Patients who do not carefully follow the instructions about using Ambien may place their lives in danger.
Drug and Alcohol Interaction
Taking Ambien in combination with other drugs or alcohol may be dangerous. Dr. Ian Cook, professor of psychiatry at UCLA's Semel Institute says the current generation (such as Ambien) of sleeping pills are safer than previous generations. The danger of problems goes up, however, when people combine medications with other meds or with alcohol.
Sleepwalking
Patients may be active and move around without any awareness of their actions after taking Ambien. They may not remember the activities they were involved in upon arising, notes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some activities that Ambien users may do while on the drug include: walking around the home, using a car, preparing food, having sex, and engaging in phone conversations. If Ambien is used in combination with alcohol, the occurrence rate of these activities may be higher.
Allergic Reaction
Ambien may cause some serious allergic reactions. Ambien intake may result in respiratory problems, such as difficulty breathing, and gastrointestinal problems, such as stomach upset and vomiting.
Lingering Drowsiness
Patients who arise before 7 to 8 hours after taking Ambien may place themselves at danger. This drug is meant to be used when the patient will sleep up to 8 hours. Ongoing drowsiness may occur even after 8 hours have passed since taking Ambien. This problematic level of drowsiness that may make it difficult to function at work and to stay alert.
Drug Dependence
Ambien is a class C-IV controlled drug. If it is abused, dependence and addiction may occur.
Loose Bowels
Diarrhea may occur with Ambien use. This side effect may impact daily activities and quality of life.
Wooziness
Ambien use may make patients feel drugged, even after they awaken. This drug may cause patients to feel abnormal, as if their brain is a bit woozy.
Poor Equilibrium
Diminished sense of equilibrium may be a side effect of Ambien use. Dizziness may occur either rarely or on an ongoing basis.
