There are several different variations of volleyball, such as indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and outdoor volleyball, and each has its own set of rules. Many of the rules are similar regardless of where the game is played, so players should be able to make an easy transition from one variation to another.

Double Hits

A player cannot hit the ball more than once in succession. A block does not count as a hit for this rule, which merely prevents players from hitting the ball twice.

Touching the Net

No part of any player can touch the net while the ball is in play. This is the reason competitive volleyball players wear tight-fitting uniforms. However, if the ball is hit into the net by the opposing team and the force of the ball pushes the net into a player on their side of the court, no foul is called.

Serving

All serves must be made behind the service line. It is illegal to step over or on the service line while serving.

Switching Positions

After the ball is served only players in the front row may switch positions. Players in the back row must remain in their positions.

Libero

In competitive play, teams are allowed to use a libero, which is a player who plays in the back row and can be substituted into the game for any back row player with the coach requesting a sub. A libero is identified by wearing a different colored shirt than the other players on the team.
