Zumba is a 60-minute dance class utilizing interval training. Interval training alternates periods of high intensity exercise with periods of low intensity exercise to burn maximum calories. Classes are choreographed to a mixture of Latin and reggaeton beats. Instructors provide high energy and classes are suitable for all fitness levels. Zumba steps aren't complicated, and each step builds on the other to create a complete routine.
Salsa
Stand with the feet together. The salsa step is done to a count of four. Step the right foot out to the side for step one and two. Bring the right foot back in for counts three and four. Repeat the movement on the left side, stepping the left foot out for counts one and two, and bringing the foot back in for steps three and four. Bend the knees and sway the hips during the movement to add salsa pizazz. Once you learn the basic salsa step, you can vary it by taking salsa steps to alternating corners.
Merengue
The merengue step is similar to walking in place. Step the feet together and leave about 3 to 4 inches of space between them. Step with the feet or march in place and bend the knees in toward the body with each step. Take the feet hip distance apart and continue with the same stepping movement, bringing the knees toward the center of the body with each step.
Cumbia
The cumbia is done with one foot. Begin with the feet together. Take one large step forward with the right foot, then one large step back, rotating on the ball of the left foot with each step. Push off the left leg to prevent damage to the knee while stepping forward and back. Step the right foot out to the front, side, and back rotating in a circle, then switch legs.
