While people are complex and may hide their true feelings, some common signs of suicidal behavior can spur caring people to give support and direct a suicidal person toward help. Suicide.org states that 75 percent of the people who kill themselves exhibit warning signs that can be identified. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) states 33,000 people took their own lives in 2006, and many of those deaths could have been prevented if someone had noted and acted on the behavioral signs.

Depressed Behavior

Whether by word or behavior, most people who commit suicide display their depression through their speech, writing and actions. Suicide.org states that untreated depression is the top reason for suicide. If a person expresses sadness, hopelessness, helplessness and feelings there is no reason to go on, suicide may be her next action. She may talk extensively about death, a family member who committed suicide or dwell on the anniversary of someone who committed suicide.

Threats of Self-Harm

Although it may seem obvious, you should take verbal threats of suicide seriously and not just as healthy venting. The NIMH states those who intend to hurt themselves often say so. If a person states he might hurt himself and adds a method, such as a firearm, poison, overdose or cutting his wrists, the verbal threat is intensified to the level where you should seek immediate help. The Mayo Clinic notes such expressions may indicate an immediate crisis, and you should call either 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK, or (800) 273-8255.

End-of-Life Actions

A person may show significant signs of suicidal intent by making end-of-life plans. The Mayo Clinic notes that if someone you know is giving away prized possessions, making a will and putting her financial and business affairs in order, she could be planning suicide. She may display other end-point behaviors, such as ending relationships and withdrawing from normal social contacts.

Reckless Behavior

Some people may make suicidal gestures that get out of hand, or they may participate in risky behavior. Suicide.org states a person using drugs, drinking alcohol excessively, performing dangerous actions or intentionally putting himself at risk is displaying suicidal signs.
