Organized baseball is often one of the first sports that children play. While it can become competitive once leagues start to keep score, the goal is for the players to improve in their play, to have a good time and to want to play again at the start of the next season. The rules of the game are similar to the ones used by older players, but there are many safety precautions that are taken to protect kids.
Playing Time
All players must play at least three innings of every game. In organized youth baseball, it's not fair to let your best players compete at the expense of those who are not as accomplished. Little League managers and coaches know that they have to get everyone in the lineup. They can't stick the worst player in right field. Every player should get an opportunity to play as many positions as possible. However, if the manager believes that the player can't protect himself--at positions like pitcher, catcher or first base--then the player should not be put into those positions.
Protective Equipment
All players have to wear batting helmets at every at-bat and when on base. All batting helmets must supply coverage to the head and the ears. Optional face masks are allowed to provide coverage to the eyes, nose and mouth. These additions are not required. All catchers must wear face masks, chest protectors and shin guards. It is recommended that boys wear protective cups in their athletic supporters when catching.
Stealing of Bases
Base stealing is allowed in youth baseball leagues when the players are 9 years of age and older. In leagues with 9- and 10-year-olds, players can attempt to steal after the ball has crossed home plate. Players cannot leave earlier until they are 11 years of age and older. Players 11 and older can advance to first base when the catcher fails to secure the third strike.
Field Dimensions
The bases are 60 feet apart on a youth baseball diamond. The pitching mound is 40 to 50 feet away, depending on the age group. Fences must be a minimum of 175 feet from home plate.
