Advil PM is an over-the-counter preparation indicated for sleeplessness that is accompanied by pain or body aches. It contains 200 mg of ibuprofen, an analgesic, and 38 mg of diphenhydramine citrate, an antihistamine that induces drowsiness. This medication is for occasional use and is only appropriate if you have both insomnia and pain or aching in the body. This product is available as a tablet, called a caplet, and as a liquid inside a gelatinous capsule. Typical dosage is two caplets or capsules at bedtime. As with all medications, this product has side effects which must be considered prior to use.
Sedation
While this medicine is indicated for sleeplessness, some people will find that they feel more sedated than they wish to, or remain drowsy the next day. You could become dizzy or feel uncoordinated after taking this product. Do not perform critical tasks, such as driving, if you notice any of these side effects.
Nausea
Common side effects of Advil PM include nausea, stomach distress or pain, constipation and intestinal gas. Some patients experience a gastrointestinal bleed after using this product for two weeks or more. If this occurs, you may notice that your stools are bloody, dark or tar-like. You may also vomit emesis that looks like used coffee grounds. Seek medical care if you feel you could have a gastrointestinal bleed.
Thick Phlegm
You may notice that you have thick phlegm after taking Advil PM. This is especially likely if you have a cold, the flu or other respiratory ailment.
Headache
The "2010 Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide" relates that, although the ibuprofen in this medicine is used to treat mild pain, headache is a common side effect. Ringing in the ears, blurry vision or double vision is also possible.
Excitability
According to Drugs.com, you may become excitable after taking Advil PM. This may manifest as hyperactivity or a nervous tension with exaggerated startle response.
Dry Mouth
You may develop a dry mouth, throat or nasal passages. This is usually mild.
Allergic Reaction
The drug's manufacturer describes an allergic reaction that can occur from taking Advil PM. This often happens in people who know they are allergic to aspirin. This reaction can manifest as reddened skin with blistering and a rash over the body. Hives may become evident. The face and throat may swell with effects ranging from wheezing to difficulty breathing. Allergic shock is possible. Seek immediate medical help for this reaction.
