One of the products manufactured by SlimQuick is the seven-day cleanse, designed to jump start a diet program by increasing metabolism, improving digestive tract function, balancing blood sugar and cleansing the colon. The primary active ingredients in the SlimQuick Cleanse are probiotics, green tea, ginseng, glucumanna, chaste tree berry and antioxidants. As with any weight loss aid, consumers should consult their physicians before taking supplements and prepare for unwanted side effects.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
The SlimQuick Cleanse contains senna, which is an herb that is used to treat constipation. As a laxative, the herb can exacerbate stomach disorders in those who already have stomach problems. The weight loss supplement can cause diarrhea, cramps, abdominal pain, loose stools and nausea. The laxative ingredients, coupled with the probiotics in the SlimQuick Cleanse, stimulate the colon and should be avoided by anyone with ulcers, colitis or hemorrhoids. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic advise not to use senna and other strong laxatives for more than 14 days. Overuse can cause nerve, muscle or intestinal damage. The SlimQuick Cleanse recommends taking the product for no more than seven days.
Nervous System Side Effects
Herbs such as ginseng, which is used in the SlimQuick Cleanse, can cause side effects that affect the nervous system. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center report that ginseng can cause anxiety, restlessness, headaches and euphoria. People who are being treated for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia should not take Slimquick. The ingredients can interact negatively with their medications, particularly MAO inhibitors. Ingredients in SlimQuick also can increase the stimulant effect of other medications such as those taken for attention deficit disorder. Ginseng can block the pain-killing properties of other drugs, such as morphine. Other possible nervous system side effects reported by the manufacturer include tremors, irregular heartbeat, arrhythmia, nervousness and depression.
Other Side Effects
High blood pressure, seizures, liver and thyroid irregularities, and stroke are other side effects listed by the makers of SlimQuick. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take the SlimQuick Cleanse, because it could affect the baby. People who have diabetes, anemia or difficulty urinating are warned not to use the diet aid. SlimQuick is made up of 98 percent polyphenols, or green tea. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center report that polyphenols can interact negatively with other herbs and medications. Possible side effects from green tea include insomnia, heart palpitations, headaches and nausea. The green tea properties can exacerbate symptoms of certain diseases as well, such as ulcers, kidney disease and psychological disorders.
